Prison Ministry

“I was in prison and you came to visit me.” – Matthew 25:36

In Tennessee, approximately 70% of the prisoners who are released eventually return and are incarcerated again.

However, only five percent of those who participate in the Church of Christ prison ministry and rededicate their lives or are baptized for the first time have returned after their release.

Through this ministry, volunteers and staff conduct weekly worship services in ten area prisons and five jails.  Presently, there are 31 classes and worship services reaching over 600 men and women each week with some 400 Bible correspondence courses being offered monthly.

This ministry transforms lives!

The roots for this ministry – which now includes 22 churches in the middle Tennessee area – were planted in 1963 at Madison Church of Christ by members Harold and Helen Cox – who are still very active in it. Since that time, 22 congregations in the middle Tennessee area have come together under the leadership of the Coxes and Ron Goodman, who now directs the program.  This group of individuals was instrumental in beginning the Federal Prison Outreach Ministry which has served prisoners in all 50 states as well as 85 foreign nations. Since the federal program began in 1984, more than 9,000 prisoners have been baptized and more than 13,000 restored to Christ.

More than 160 volunteers make this program work by giving their time to help conduct Bible studies and worship services, mentor and visit prisoners one-on-one as well as encourage them through a pen pal program. And more volunteers are always welcome!

Funding for the ministry is provided by various churches, individuals, foundations and businesses.  Financial contributions to the ministry can be sent to:
